Like many, finding love was my deepest desire in this life. Despite deeply wanting love, I spent years dating and in relationships as a serial monogamist. I’d managed to rack up a rich dating history of the good, bad, and ugly. I had wonderful men in my life, as well as those who weren’t good to me. I’d been in love multiple times and experienced devastating heartbreak. Some were blessings, the others lessons. After my last dramatic break-up though, I was broken open. It awakened me and left me forever changed. So much so, I thought I might go the rest of my life without a romantic partner, and for the first time in my life, I was okay with it. I didn’t know if this would last 6 weeks, months, or years. I didn’t care. I took personal inventory--to nurture and focus on myself in a way I never before had. I decided I had to get me right. I was ripe for an evolutionary leap and filled with personal agency. I never wanted to experience anything like it again and decided I needed to change to ensure this never recurred. It brought me to a place of re-evaluating my relationships, my life, and what I really wanted personally and professionally. I took time out to focus on myself and how to manifest what I wanted. And it’s made all the difference.
And after writing a poem that bared my soul and illustrated why I was grateful for every moment that preceded it because it molded me into who I was meant to be, I decided I wanted to share it at a spoken word event—with other deeply passionate souls. Not wanting to fly solo and feeling a bit lonely after 8 months of me time, I asked a friend to join. The same friend who I had invited countless times post-breakups, who gratefully always said yes to the extra concert ticket. We had a great time and agreed to make it a monthly thing.
